Like it or not, one of our jobs as parents is to teach our kids about sex and sexual values.
And while some parents in generations past used to balk at this notion, we don’t have that luxury. Our culture is saturated with unhealthy messages about sex. It’s just a matter of time before confusing and degrading messages reach the ears (and eyes) of our children.
Just the thought of talking to my kids about sex used to raise my blood pressure and cause me to break out in a cold sweat. I would envision gasping and grasping for words – worried about not providing enough information, or worse, too much information.
Then I heard Mary Flo Ridley’s message. She was speaking locally and I parked myself in the front row to hear her message called “Sooner Than You Think”. Ridley teaches parents how to talk to their kids about sex, birth, conception and reproduction in a way that preserves their innocence (and your blood pressure). Her approach is truthful and matter-of-fact and just plain old refreshing.
What I love about Mary Flo Ridley is that she makes this anxiety-producing topic almost easy. Her recommendations have saved the Hildebrand family from some very uncomfortable moments and I am forever grateful for her commitment to this topic. She is providing parenting gold, and our family is richer because of her wisdom.
Mary Flo teaches parents to:
♦ Shape your child’s view about sex
♦ Increase your confidence when discussing uncomfortable topics
♦ Strengthen your connection with your child
♦ Define your family’s mission statement
If you don’t talk to your kids about sex, someone else will. And chances are they will provide wrong information and/or totally misguided information about this fundamental element of life.
